OBITUARY FROM THE "CRESCO PLAIN DEALER" NEWSPAPER, CRESCO, HOWARD COUNTY, IOWA - MAY 4, 1909

"The angels came down from heaven at 3:40 Thursday morning, the 27th day of April 1909, and took from us our beloved father, Lawrence Malek, to Heaven, after years of hard toil and suffering, during which time he made quiet preparation for the eternal home, and for the future of his loved wife and children. Finally, while the physical forces were dissolving, he slept at last to wake with loved ones in that home to which he longs to go, the Savior being his constant aim.

He was born in Votic, Bohemia, on the 10th day of August 1849. When four years of age he came to America with his parents and settled in Winneshiek county, Iowa, and on November 3, 1873 he was unit in marriage to Anna Radouich and moved onto his farm in Brule county, South Dakota and there earned a livelihood for nine years, when he returned to Iowa and labored nine years on a farm in Dickinson county, and lastly came to Howard county and spent the last nine years of his life near Schley, Iowa in laboring hard to earn a living and to provide for his family until two days before his final leave, when he took sick while at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M.D. Whalen.

Fourteen children blessed the union of this once young and happy couple, eight girls and six boys, three of whom died in infancy and William dying in 1900. The others, Josie R., Lewis C., Frank, Charley, Joseph C., May, Maggie, Carrie, Mrs. J.J. Zeman of Calmar, and Mrs. M.D. Whalen of Harmony, Minn., and a wife, three brothers and three sisters and a host of friends are left to mourn his loss.

Mr. Malek was a many of many high qualities and enjoyed the friendship of all who knew him. He was a kind husband, a dear father, a true neighbor and real citizen.

The funeral took place on Saturday, May 1, 1909, at the Holy Trinity church in Protivin, conducted by Rev. Father Lakomy and was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery."
