Blast near Parkers kills three
A Douglas County farm woman and her two teen-age sons were killed Saturday when an explosion leveled their house about 9:30 a.m. eight miles south of Parkers Prairie. Leaf Valley Fire Chief Mike Noetzelman said the woman and her two sons were killed instantly in the explosion about three miles northeast of Leaf Valley. He said the apparent cause cf the blast was a leak in the farmhouse's propane tank. Douglas County Sheriff Norm Saito identified the victims as Frances Hobbs, 35, and her sons, David, 15, and Douglas, 14. Two other children, Dan, 9, and Chris, 8, were at church when the explosion occurred, the sheriff said. Dale Hobbs, husband and father of the victims, survived the explosion with minor injuries. Noetzelman said Hobbs crawled from the rubble and drove a pickup truck to a neighbor's farm to summon help. The family's frame house was completely leveled by the blast. Debris from the explosion was found scattered as far as 200 feet away, the fire chief said. Del Johnson, a state fire marshal, said investigations were continuing. He said the family apparently had no warning before the blast. I have never seen an explosion like this in 27 years," Johnson told the Associated Press. The woman's body was blown about 20 feet from the kitchen by the blast. Her two sons, who had been watching television, were found buried beneath the rubble, the fire chief said. Sunday, sheriff's deputies guarding the entrance to the farm near County Road 35 north of Lake Miltona. barred a Daily Journal photographer from taking pictures. The location of the tragedy is about two miles south of the Otter Tail County line.
