STELLA (SMITH) MOORE, Wife of William D. Moore

Stella was born in Georgetown, Tx. Her parents were Alfred Marion Smith, and Cora Louise Barron Smith. She was one of six children. She was raised in rural west Lometa in the country.

She married William Dee Moore Nov. 14, 1920 in Lometa at the Church of Christ. Stella and William Dee first lived in East rural Lometa, then just south of town, and moved into town around 1930, where they lived untii their deaths. They had 4 children: Wanda Rue Moore; Alfa Lou "Cokie" Moore; Annelle "Nell" Moore; Warren Dee "Sonny" Moore. Stella and William Dee lived in rural Lometa and Lometa all their married lives.

Stella worked at the Lometa School Cafeteria for a number of years, as cook and server. She came to love all the children and they did her too. They are adults with grandchildren now and still have fond memories of her.

We were all a close family, gathering for every occasion, and the house was always filled with many family and friends, with lots of great food to eat, as Stella was a wonderful cook! She was also an excellent seamstress and quilt maker. She canned fruits & vegetables, gardened, had lovely flowers, and loved everyone. Everyone who ever met her, loved her for her sweet personality. There were many lively games of Canasta going on in the house when family was all there! She was devoted to her family. She didn't drive, so she had to rely on rides to town, or she walked to town with her big black umbrella shading her from the sun. I have many wonderful memories of walking to town with her to get groceries, go to the movies, or pick up something for her sewing from the store. It was about a mile and a half to town. On her walks, she would pick up pieces of colored broken glass, and place them on the hill leading up to the outhouse. She thought them so beautiful.

Stella died of Cancer in her home in Lometa, with her daughter-in-law, Peggy Brister Moore, lovingly caring for her. She is buried beside her life-long companion and husband, William Dee, sharing a headstone. Her parents, sister, Lois, and son, Sonny and his wife, Peggy, are also buried adjacent to her. Her daughters, Alfa Lou, and Nell's ashes are strewn on their old homeplace in town,(just East and down the road from the High School.)
