Resident of Chouteau County For 63 Years Died Wednesday
Hilaire LaBarre, a resident of Chouteau county and Fort Benton for the past 63 years, passed away at his home in this city about 8 o'clock this Wednesday morning. He had been sick for the past week or ten days and with the exception of occasional flareups, he had been in quite good health throughout these years. The news of his passing cast a gloom over this community in which he had lived during these many years.
Hilaire LaBarre was born on Sept. 25, 1871, at St. Alexandre, Quebec, Canada, where he spent his early life. He came to the United States and Fort Benton area in 1898 and for a period of nine years he was associated with his brother, the late Fred LaBarre, in the operation of the LaBarre ranch on the Marias river, where they carried on livestock operations in both horses and cattle.
LaBarre came to Fort Benton in 1907 and purchased the livery business of the late George F. Lewis. Following a fire he moved to the present location of the Fort Benton Motor company. Mr. LaBarre became associated with the late Charles Thompson and the firm name was LaBarre & Thompson for a number of years. They also operated a stable at Highwood in the early days. A few years later he purchased the interest of Mr. Thompson and operated it alone. He expanded the business in the early days of the homestead era and by 1910 he had a large number of horses which were used for hauling material out for the new settlers and also saddle horses and surreys for hire to homesteaders seeking locations for their lands. He also established a garage there in 1913 and built the main garage building in 1915, adding the service station later on. He operated a bus service to all trains to and from the depot for 20 years. He operated for many years with horses and put in the first powered bus--an old White bus and later a Stanley steamer. He sold out his entire business in April 1945 and retired from the business world, after being in business for more than 38 years.
Mr. LaBarre was married to Flora Brose in Helena on April 4, 1910, who passed away May 8, 1930. On Jan. 31, 1933, he was united in marriage to Eileen Swanson in this city.
Mr. LaBarre was a member of the Knights of Columbus; a devoted member of the Catholic church; a charter member of the Fort Benton Kiwanis Club, which was organized in 1935, and prior to that was a member of the old Commercial Club for many years. Mr. LaBarre took an active interest in all civic affairs. In 1914 he was first elected a member of the city council, a service that extended over many years and perhaps as long or longer service than most any Montana councilman.
Mr. LaBarre had a wide acquaintance throughout Chouteau county and while engaged in business here made close friends of most of his many customers. He was always an accommodating businessman and fair in his dealings. Close friends sought his advice and counsel on many business enterprises. His record throughout his long residence among us is a great memorial to leave as a heritage to all of us. His place will be a hard one to fill in this community.
He leaves to mourn his passing his devoted wife; two daughters, Mrs. Leona Carmel of Frankfurt, Germany, and Virginia Swanson of Great Falls; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held from the Immaculate Conception church at 10 o'clock Saturday morning. Burial will be made in the family plot in Riverside cemetery.
