Obituary from the Shreveport Times newspaper, Oct. 23, 2003, Thursday, p. 3-B:

Lt. Col. Lonnie H. Crook, USAF, Ret., 89, passed away at Live Oak Retirement Center on Tuesday, October 21, 2003. Visitation will be held at Osborn Funeral Home on Thursday, October 23rd from 5 until 8 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 24, 2003 at Kings Highway Christian Church. Officiating will be Dr. Jeff Timm and assisted by Rev. David Farmer both of Kings Highway Christian Church. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery with full military honors.

Mr. Crook was a native of Pangburn, AR and a resident of Shreveport since 1967. He was a member of Kings Highway Christian Church where he served as an Elder, in the American Legion, the Air Force Association, the Retired Officers Association, the 8th Air Force Historical Society and the 34th Bomb Group (H) Association.

Lonnie began his military career at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City in 1941 where he finished bombardier training and was awarded his wings. It was the beginning of a long and illustrious career that included service in England, Wiesbaden, and Tripoli, bombing missions, intelligence assignments, and food drops to Dutch children. He returned to Air Force Reserve status in 1946 but was recalled to duty after the beginning of the Korean War. He was a highly decorated veteran of World War II and the Korean War, and accomplishments were recognized with promotions in rank and many medals including the Air Medal.

Mr. Crook was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Crook Hearn; parents, Hugh Chester and Carrie Marsh Crook; two brothers, Hughie W. Crook and Aubrey L. Crook; and two sisters, Audrey Crook Dodd and Lucille Crook Abernathy. He is survived by his wife, Dorabel Whitlatch Crook; two grandchildren, Robert Bryan Hearn, Jr. and Karen Noel Hearn, both of Baton Rouge; one brother, F. Wesley Crook, of Little Rock, AR; and several nieces.

Pallbearers will be Hal Magner, Bill Kamphuis, Mack Krentel, Billy Brewer, Bill Parks, Don Lantz and Bill Atkinson.

Honorary pallbearers will be L. A. Woolverton, Todd Tillman and Mitch Woodard.

The family requests that memorials be made to Kings Highway Christian Church, 800 Kings Hwy., Shreveport LA 71104; Live Oak Retirement Center, 600 E. Flournoy Lucas, Shreveport LA 71115 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
