GEORGE GRIFFIN HERRING III '57
Captain George Griffin Herring III, USN (Ret.), died on Friday, 14 April 2000 in the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center in Wilmington, NC, of cancer.
Captain Herring was born in San Diego, CA, on 20 August 1935, to George Griffin Herring Jr. '21 and Frieda Margaret Ball Herring.
He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1957 and trained as an aviator in Pensacola, FL, after which he flew various patrol aircraft, including the P-3 Orion, from bases on the Atlantic Coast. He also served as commanding officer of VT-2, a training squadron in Milton, FL; as naval attaché to Thailand and Burma; and as a fellow at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C.
After retiring from the Navy in 1987, Captain Herring pursued varied business interests in Northern Virginia, then moved to Wilmington, NC, in 1996, where he was employed by the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher.
He was an active member of St. John's Epis copal Church in Wilmington, NC. Before his move to North Carolina, he was a founder, vestry member, and chair of the building committee at St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Reston, VA. He is survived by two sons, John Griffin Herring and David Nevils Herring; two daughters, Kirsten Ann Hart and Elizabeth Anne Herring; and three grandchildren, Duncan James Hart, Paige Westlake Herring, and George William Herring. Inurnment with honors was performed at the USNA Columbarium.
