A World War II U.S. Army Veteran, he was discharged as a staff sergeant after serving in the European Theatre of Operations, seeing action with the Old Hickory Division of the 30th Infantry Division in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was among the American Troops that met with the Russian Army on the Elbe River. He was decorated with the Expert Combat Badge, the Good Conduct Ribbon, the Presidential Citation and the Ruropean Theatre of Operations Ribbon with three Battle Stars.
