Reginald Westwood Whitehurst, 99, of 1336 Carolyn Drive, passed away Sept. 12, 2003 at Sentara Hospital of Virginia Beach.
The son of James Edward Whitehurst and Ora Turpin Whitehurst, he was born in Norfolk June 24, 1904. He was predeceased by a brother, Clinton H. Whitehurst.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Celia McKenney Whitehurst; a sister, Mrs. F.M. Clarkson of Escondido, Calif.; two sons, Reginald W. Whitehurst Jr. of Spartanburg, S.C. and Donald M. Whitehurst of Concord, Calif.; two daughters, Myra Skinner and Mary Lyon Camper, both of Virginia Beach; and 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife of 53 years, Marion Barco Whitehurst.
He was employed by The Norfolk & Western Railway from 1922 to 1968 and retired as yardmaster. He was a member of the Virginia Beach Sports Club and a charter member of the Virginia Beach Lions Club, where he was active until his death. He was a member of Galilee Episcopal Church and the Mark Stone Men's Bible Class of Great Neck Baptist Church. His witty humor and kindly spirit will be missed by all who knew him.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Great Neck Baptist Church of Virginia Beach. Burial will follow at the Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery on Laskin Road. The family will receive friends on Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel.
While he was employed with the Norfolk and Western during the depression, Reggie sent needy transients to the Union Mission and witnessed first-hand the love and compassion of that ministry. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Union Mission and Hope Haven Children's Home, P.O.Box 3203, Norfolk, VA 23514
