Harold Van Winkle known as "Rip" to his family and friends lived in Jersey City, New Jersey. He married Dorothy Berberick and got the whole family along with her. He could often be found on or near Virginia Avenue. His sister-in-law Grace owned a store on Mallory and his in-laws resided below Mallory on Virginia Avenue near Newark Bay.
Harold and Dorothy had three children: Jim, Harriet, and Linda.
"Rip" was a diesel mechanic. He suffered from heart trouble and is written up in medical journals as being one of the first to receive valve transplants.
