GREELEY - Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church here for Mrs. Catherine Birkby, 86, a pioneer resident of the Heartland. The Revs. James Kremeler, Lawrence Fenton and Father Rolland will concelebrate the requiem mass. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is to be Tuesday...at the T. J. Finn and Sons Mortuary in Greeley. Rosary was to be said at 8 p.m. Mrs. Birkby died Monday afternoon in a Grand Island hospital following complications resulting from a broken hip she suffered at her farm home near Greeley in January.
Mrs. Birkby was born March 17, 1883, at Corning, Iowa, the daughter of Patrick and Catherine Toohey Grady. At the age of five, she came by covered wagon with her family to a homestead near Ericson in Garfield County. Several years later the family moved to a farm near Spalding. In January of 1915, she married William C. Birkby at O'Connor. The couple farmed in that community until his death in 1940. Mrs. Birkby continued to live on the family farm until the time of her accident.
Surviving are two daughters, Miss Gertrude Birkby of Greeley and Mrs. Catherine Berger of Spalding; one son, W. Paul of Greeley; one brother, Clem of Herman, and 15 grandchildren. Mrs. Birkby was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters.
