James Clontz was a son of Thomas Nelson (Tommy) Clontz and Mary Raye Hall Clontz. He was married to Annie Mae Clontz and worked as the co-operator of the Burkemont Gulf Station on Burkemont Avenue in Morganton, NC. He served in the Marines in World War II.

He and another veteran were on their way home from a VFW meeting when they collided with another car on Mineral Springs Mountain Road. James was killed instantly.

Clontz was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church. In addition to his wife and parents, he was survived by a two-year-old daughter, one brother, and one sister.

The funeral was conducted at Arney's Chapel Methodist Church with the Rev. Benny Waters officiating.
