Former Salt Creek Farmer and Kendall Miner Succumbs to Heart Ailment
Word has been received here of the death Saturday in Portland, Ore., of Ed Kertz, pioneer resident of Central Montana who succumbed to a heart ailment. He was 67 years old and a brother of John G. Kertz of Lewistown. The body will be brought to Lewistown for funeral services, definite arrangements to be announced later. For the past five years he had been living with a son, Ernest, in Portland.
He also is survived by a grandson, Roger; two brothers, Charles H. of Noxon, Mont., and John of Lewistown.
Mr. Kertz came to Central Montana with his parents in 1879. He settled first at Martinsdale and later was a miner at the old camp of Kendall. Retiring from ming he engaged in ranching on Salt Creek for several yars.
Funeral services for the late John Edward Kertz, old time resident of the Kendall and Salt Creek sections; who died last Saturday in Portland, Oregon following a prolonged, Oregon following a prolonged illness, where held Wednesday morning at the Creel chapel.
The Rev. Clarence W. Orner of the Presbyterian Church was in charge of the services during which the Rev. E. R. Kaemmer of the Methodist Church accompanied by Miss Grace Pennock sand, "In the Garden" and "Abide With Me." Interment followed at the Lewistown Cemetery.
John Edward Kertz was born at St. Genevieve, Mo., July 10, 1869. When he was ten years of age he came with his parents to Montana settling on a ranch near Martinsdale. In the year 1890 they moved to Castle, a mining town and after years residence there he moved to a ranch north of Saco, Montana in Milk River Valley. In 1908 he was united in marriage with Miss Alexandria McKenzzie at Malta, Montana. Miss McKenzie had come out from Detroit to visit with her sister, who was the sister-in-law of Mr. Kertz. She died July 3, 1923. In 1901, he moved with his bride to Kendall, Montana where he worked as timberman in a mine. In 1911 they moved to a ranch along Salt Creek where he resided until five years ago, when he went out to Portland to live with his son, Ernest. About two months ago he began to fail. His heart weakened and the end came peacefully last Saturday evening at 7:00.
He is survived by two brothers: J. George of Lewistown and Charles H. of Noxon, Mont.; one son, Ernest of Portland, Ore., and a grandson, Roger.
