Nana's first name was also found as Nanna and Nannie. She married Melvin Marvin Ballard, 24 November 1904 in Rogersville, Hawkins County, Tennessee. Her marriage to Melvin was her second marriage. Her first marriage, according to family, was to a Thomas Setser, and she and Thomas had 2 children. After Thomas died, she married Melvin Ballard. They adopted Mary Cathrine Johnson, when Mary's mother died.

The 1900 census for Whitesburg Village, Hamblen County, Tennessee shows her listed as Nannie Setser, a widow, age 25, born in Tennessee, Dec. 1874, with an occupation as a servant. Both the 1900 and 1910 census shows Nannie had given birth to two children, and only one was still living. That one child, John F. Setser, was listed in 1900 as born in September 1893, in Tennessee.

The 1910 census shows Nannie M. Ballard, wife of Melvin M. Ballard, living in Knox County, Tennessee in Civil District 8. She is age 31, her husband is age 29, they have been married for 4 years. Nannie still lists two children born, and one still living. Her son is listed here as Floyd J. Ballard, age 14, and a daughter, Mary K. Ballard is listed as age 5, born in Tennessee. Mary was born to Nannie's sister, Jimie Johnson, who passed away not long after Mary was born. Melvin and Nannie adopted and raised Mary.
