--Frances Underwood--
Word has been received here of the death of Frances Lee Underwood of Atlanta, Georgia, a longtime newspaper employee and the mother of Mary Clare Soper, 607 Columbia (Lawton). Mrs. Underwood died there Saturday (15th) in a nursing home.
Funeral will be at 2 p. m. Wednesday in the Street and Draper Funeral Home Chapel, Oklahoma City, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Underwood was born May 31 1893, in Gainesville, Texas. She was a former Lawton resident and was employed with the Lawton Morning news in 1949. She married P. E. D. Underwood in 1920. Mr. Underwood owned the Thomas (Oklahoma) Tribune and was publisher of the El Reno American. He died in February 1944.
Mrs. Underwood worked as daily editor of the Elk City Daily News before coming to the Lawton Morning Press. She later worked as a feature writer for the Gadsden Times, Gadsden, Alabama, for a number of years. She was a member of the Baptist Church and many civic organizations. Mrs. Underwood was also listed in Who's Who in American Women.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Clare Soper, of 607 Columbia, (Lawton); two sons, Colonel (Ret) R. L. Underwood, Pensacola, Florida, and Thomas P. Underwood, Atlanta; two brothers, Q. C. Roberts, San Antonio, Texas and Glen Roberts of Corpus Christi, Texas, three sisters, Clare Roberts Brogan, San Antonio; Mrs. W. H. Davidson, Houston; and Mrs. Don Paulk, Marshall, Texas; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
