Confederate States Army Officer. After enlisting in New Orleans in 1861, he became a Lieutenant, Company D, 2nd Louisiana Infantry Regiment. He received a commission as Major in May 1862. At the Battle of Malvern Hill, he picked up the company colors after they had fallen and was in the process of rallying his men when he was hit by several shots which killed him instantly. The monument marking his grave was raised by members of his company.
