After the war he moved to Cincinnati, and married Emma Nuring. He ran a saloon for several years in the late 1870s and early 1880s, then became a teamster. He moved back to Columbus about 1887.
He spent his final days in the Soldier and Sailors' Home in Sandusky, and was laid to rest in his parents' family lot beside the grave of his sister Louise.
