Foltz's Death - Poor Health Drives a Rich Farmer to Suicide
As a result of the investigation made by Coroner Beck in regard to the strange death of Jonathan Foltz, an account of which appeared in The Sun exclusively Tuesday, it developed that he had committed suicide with a cool deliberation. Foltz was a wealthy farmer living five miles southwest of the city. For some time he had been in poor health and physicians gave him no encouragement. Tuesday morning he took a rifle and left the house, saying that he was going to shoot a hawk that had been troubling him. The report of the gun was heard shortly after, but as Foltz did not return to the house promptly his wife started out to find him. In the wood shed she came upon the dead body of her husband. A bullet hole in his head and the rifle with a string attached to the trigger told the story. A letter found in the dead man's clothes said: "My old age and sleepless nights are wearing me out. I fear a long and lingering death. It is hard to give you up, but it is harder for me to live. children, take good care of mother. bury me in Bethel graveyard with my relatives. May Good forgive me. I want mother to have the rents of the farm and personal property, after all debts are paid. Look in my deed package."
In the package referred to was found a will carefully drawn up. Foltz was 67 years old and leaves a widow and eight children; also $40,000 worth of property.
