U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Brown University Rhode Island in 1805, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1809 and commenced to practice law in Hanover, Massachusetts, in 1811. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives in 1814 and served in the Massachusetts State Senate in 1819. In 1820, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixteenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Zabdiel Sampson, reelected as a Republican to the Seventeenth Congress, elected as an Adams-Clay Republican to the Eighteenth Congress and reelected as an Adams to the Nineteenth Congress, serving until 1827. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he served as an Executive Councilor, (1827-31) and as a probate judge from 1843, until his death.
