Art was born in Cabool, Missouri on October 5, 1914, to Eldora and Owen H. Atkins. He graduated from Pleasanton High School in Pleasanton, Kansas at the age of 16. He later moved to Mt. Grove, Missouri where he met Nina Peterson.
Art married Nina in Cabool, Missouri on March 19, 1938. They were married for 61 years until she died on December 15, 1999. Art, Nina and their young son, Fred, came to the Boise Valley in the early 1940's. Art worked in a body shop and later farmed in Kuna and the Nampa area.
He gave up farming in the 1960's and became a carpenter. He helped to build several houses in the Nampa area. Because of his talent as a finish carpenter, Art built several kitchens and did other finish work. He enjoyed building beautiful pieces of furniture and later clocks and other small pieces to give away.
Art and Nina loved camping, fishing, spending time looking for arrowheads, and hunting deer in the Owyhees. Because of a life long love of singing, Art sang in barbershop chorus and quartets for several years.
A longtime member of the Nampa Church of the Brethren, Art helped build the church building at its present location. And for many years he shared his beautiful bass voice in the church choir.
Art is survived by his sister, Ruth Rhodes; son, Fred (Faye) Atkins; daughter, Sue (John) Treinen; four grandchildren, John Owen (Jennifer) Atkins, Jill Giese, Gina (David) Green, and Dustin Giese; two great-granddaughters, Hannah and Grace Green; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Art is preceeded in death by his parents, his wife, Nina, and two brothers.
There will be a memorial service at 11:00am on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at the Nampa Church of the Brethren, 11030 Orchard Avenue.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nampa Church of the Brethren.
The family would like to thank the staff of Sunnyridge Retirement Center, Ashley Manor Hyde Park and Autumn Crest Hospice for their care and kindness.
