US Congressman. Elected as a Whig to represent Massachusetts' 3rd District in the Thirty-third Congress, he served from 1853 to 1855. The Boston-born Edmands had a high school education and spent most of his adult life in the wool industry, eventually becoming treasurer of the Pacific Mills Co. in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He also owned a farm and other real estate in Newton, where he made his home. Edmands' tenure on Capitol Hill saw the fatal rupture of the Whig Party over the Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854), with its provisions for the expansion of slavery; whether for this reason or a desire to return to his business affairs, he refused to seek reelection. In 1868 he was a presidential elector on the Republican ticket but made no further bids for political office.
