FORT WORTH -- Herbert "Herb" J. Beckman, 88, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009.

Celebration of life: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Christ Chapel Bible Church, 3470 Birchman Ave., Fort Worth, Dr. Jim Boyd and the Rev. Tricia Baldwin officiating. Visitation with the family will follow the service. It was his request there be no flowers.

Memorials: If desired, contributions may be made to Cancer Care Services, 623 S. Henderson St., Fort Worth, Texas 76104; Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, Box 199300, Dallas, Texas 75219; or a charity of choice.

Herb was born May 20, 1921, to Herbert H. Beckman and Ruth Dixon Beckman and grew up in Hampton, Iowa. He played in the school band and won first place in the National Solo Snare Drum Competition during his senior year of high school. Herb attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he met his wife, Mildred "Millie." They made their home in Cedar Rapids. While he was vice president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Eastern Iowa Band Festival was established. He enjoyed instructing drum and bugle corps.

Herb moved to Texas in 1950 and worked at Texas Motors as a truck salesman, then as truck and fleet sales manager. He was president of Sand, Gravel and Rock Haulers Association, president of Permit Hauler, Inc., and in 1962, went into stock brokerage. Herb retired as vice president of sales from A.G. Edwards, Inc. in 1988 and was to travel in his RV. He was a member of Cooke-Peavy Lodge #1162, Scottish Rite Valley of Fort Worth Orient of Texas, Moslah Temple Shrine, and served as past president of the Sunrise Optimist Club and lieutenant governor of District 13 of Texas Optimists. He was a former member of Ridglea Country Club and enjoyed golf and the RCC Stud exercise class. He was also a member of Christ Chapel Bible Church.

He loved his family and was a proud, concerned and generous husband, father and grandfather.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Joyce Davis.

He will be missed.
