G. Melvin Denney, age 87 of Carrollton, Georgia, died Thursday, July 21, 2011. Mr. Denney was born in Carrollton, GA on November 3, 1923, the son of the late Lewis Garvey Denney and Susie Mae Shadinger Denney. He was a Veteran having served in the United States Navy during World War II. He received his training at Camp Perry, Virginia and was assigned to the U.S.S. Willis destroyer escort. He served in the North Atlantic sailing north to Newfoundland and south to Cuba. When the war ended he was in Pearl Harbor. Mr. Denney retired from Southwire after 37 years and had attended Oak Grove Baptist Church throughout his lifetime.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris E. Truitt Denney; brothers, Merlin Denney, Millard Denney, Everett Denney, Donald Denney; sister, Maureen Denney Jones; and stepson, Merrell Benefield. Survivors include his wife, Iva Robinson Benefield Denney, two sons, a stepdaughter, a brother, a sister, two sisters-in-law, and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service held July 24 at the chapel of Almon Funeral Home, Carrollton, with Rev. Jerry Wolfe officiating. Pallbearers are his nephews and great nephews. Interment in the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
