Edward J. Bell, well known in military circles, a former building contractor and one of the oldest residents of the city died at his home 15 Porter street, early Sunday morning after a lingering illness. Mr. Bell was born in this city seventy-one years ago and received his early education here and at the outbreak of the Civil War enlisted in Company C, Twenty-fourth New York Volunteers, Iron Brigade, one of the first to take the field and which took an active part in the battles of Antietem, Bull Run and Gettysburg. He was a member of Post O'Brian, GAR, and of Christ church.
Surviving are his wife, Henryett, four daughters, Mrs. Charles Bullock, Mrs. George Freeman, Mrs. Alonzo Clayton, Mrs. Herbert Smith; three sons, Edward and George of this city and Robert of Buffalo; one sister Mrs. Jane Ayers, of this city.
The funeral will be held from the home Wednesday afternoon at 2:30, the Rev. Richmond H. Geaner officiating.
