Her parents were "The Great" John Mathis of Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey, and Alice Andrews. She was first married to Marmaduke Coate in 1746 and bore him two children; John and Mary. He passed away in 1749, and two years later she became the second wife of John Leeds (also a widower) and had four more children.
Sarah passed away April 17, 1799 at the age of 77. The location is sometimes given as Great Egg Harbor, Gloucester County, which is now the southern border of Atlantic County, where there was a Quaker settlement. However it's more likely to have been Little Egg Harbor, which is now Tuckerton. The Friends (Quaker) Graveyard in Tuckerton is where her parents and brother are buried. Her grave is likely unmarked, as Quakers did not use headstones during that time period.
