Louisa moved from Indiana to Putman county, Missouri in her ninth year. At the age of 15, she married John L. Thomas, 39. Louisa and John were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Louisa gave birth to six children: Laura Luella, Sarah Isabelle "Belle", Olive Jeannette "Nettie", Ira Adrian, Florence Alma & Meade Austin. By the time of her husband's death in 1899, only two of Louisa's children were still living. Louisa's last surviving child, Olive Jeannette, passed away in 1909. When she was in her late seventies, Louisa, or "Grandma Thomas" as she was known by then, lived with a grandchild, Frances Black, (Nettie's daughter) and Frances' family in California for the last year or two of her life.
