While Martha was giving birth to her daughter, Martha, the Third Fork River started to flood. She had to be rescued from the flood waters. According to previous accounts, "she died from shock seeing her narrow escape and her home float away down the river." Her newborn daughter was cared for by Mrs. Wogan of Easton, Missouri until arrangements were made after the flood of 1883.
