CARTHAGE -- Funeral services for Bill Marlow, 91, of Carthage, and a longtime Baxter resident, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Baxter.
The family will receive friends from 4 -8 p.m. today, Friday, Aug. 12, and from 10 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Marlow died on Wednesday afternoon Aug. 10, 2011, in Riverview Regional Medical Center South, following a period of declining health.
He was born Hilary Bill Marlow on Oct. 14, 1919, in the Punching Camp community of Jackson County, one of six children of the late Benton and Mettie Vickers Marlow.
He grew up in western Putnam County and graduated from Cedar Hill Elementary School. Mr. Marlow served in the Army during World War II and survived being shot during the Battle of the Bulge.
Mr. Marlow was a master plumber and pipefitter and had been a member of the Pipefitters Union Local 572 for 50 years. He had worked on the Tullahoma Wind Tunnel, the Watts Bar Nuclear Plant, Hartsville Nuclear Plant, and at the Ford Glass Plant before his retirement in 1984. Following his retirement, he continued working on the H.B. Marlow Polled Hereford Farm in Baxter, which he ran for more than 50 years. The farm continues today as the Bar None Ranch.
Mr. Marlow was saved in an old revival in 1950. Over the years he served as Sunday school superintendent and later as a deacon at the South Carthage Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a member at the time of his death.
A hard-line Democrat, Mr. Marlow spoke for the Democratic Party in Smith County for 28 years. He traveled to 24 states supporting President Bill Clinton and Vice-president Al Gore, and later traveled to 30 states while backing Al Gore and Joe Lieberman.
His family includes two sons, Gary Marlow of Baxter and David Marlow of Nashville; a stepdaughter, Linda Hughes Sloan and husband Kerry of Lebanon; two brothers, Carlos and Willard Marlow of Baxter; and a sister, Jewell Milton of Cookeville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife and the mother of his sons, Frances Jean Presley Marlow (who died March 23, 1966); his second wife, Edith Phillips Marlow (who died July 7, 1977); his wife of nearly 32 years, Ada Lee Bennett Hughes Marlow (who died May 5, 2011); and two of his siblings, Cecil Marlow and Edna Flatt.
Elder James "Pee Wee" Massey will officiate at the services.
Memorials donations may be made to South Carthage Missionary Baptist Church.
