Kearnes lived in Underwood all of his life. He was a farmer and timber man and a prominent member of the Underwood Baptist Church. The church was organized in his house and he was a charter member. He gave the land the church was built on.
Kearnes was married three times and was the father of sixteen children.
He was first married to Mary Jane Houghland. She was the daughter of James Collings and Elizabeth (Myers) Houghland.
Their children were James Kearnes Collings, Elizabeth (Collings) Rogers, Catherine Cooper (Collings) Rogers, Rachel Catherine (Collings) Rogers.
He remarried a second time to Cynthia Higdon in 1860.
Their children were Hezikiah Collings, Eddy Collings, Flora E. (Collings) Abbott and Emma Collings.
He remarried a third time to Elizabeth Partin, the daughter of Elizabeth Porter on Feb 3, 1870.
Their children were William Elston "Wid" Collings, Jemima Jennings "Mima" (Collings) Davis, Matilda Pheobe (Collings, Montgomery, Eilzabeth (Collings) Lewis, Eva (Collings) Hall, John Edward Collings, Floyd Collings, and Charley Collings.
