Joseph was born December 8, 1881 in Fountain Green, Utah. He was the eighth of the nine children born to James (Jens) and Ane Andersen. His parents spelled their last name with an e, but the children adopted the spelling with an o.

He served in the Southern States Mission from 1905-1907. While here, he had to work for much of his money for meals and a room by doing different odd jobs. Many times he and his companion slept in the woods when no one offered them a bed for the night.

In 1910 he married Katie Jensen in the Salt Lake Temple. They had 7 children--Arvin, Elaine, Ewell, Gloyd, Ruby, Darus, and Blaine.

Joe spent much of his working years herding sheep. Later he did farm work until he was in his seventies. He was honest and hardworking. He loved animals--especially horses and dogs.

He owned one car, but drove it badly. He would forget to watch the road. From habit, he kept his eyes on the fields and farmers doing their work. He was much more comfortable and safer in a saddle.

He died at age 88 on July 24, 1970.
