Benjamin was the son of Thomas Collings Sr. and Drucilla Margaret (Kinnett) Collings.

He was a brother to David "Dana" Collings, Allen Andrew Collings, Catherine Collings, Thomas Collings Jr. and Drusilla Collings.

He married Pheobe Broady on March 15, 1918 in Washington County, Kentucky.

Their children were Cynthia Ann (Collings) Richey, Thomas H. Collings, Joseph Collings, Bernetta (Collings) Allphin, Jane Dent (Collings) Lytle, David H. Collings, Drusilla Kennett (Collings) Abbot, Pheobe (Collings) Lyons, Satchie Minerva (Collings) Hendricks and Mary Ann "Polly" (Collings) Abbot.
