Potsdam Herald Recorder, Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, N.Y., Friday, January 28, 1927:

Herbert Barnum, who was born in Potsdam 85 years ago and spent the greater part of his life here, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles O'Brien, San Francisco, Calif., Monday, January 17. His parents were Mr. & Mrs. Lorin Barnum, and he was educated in the local schools and attended the old St. Lawrence Academy He married Miss Louise Pinney who died in 1892. One daughter, Edith Barnum, was born to them.
Mr. Barnum was 85 years old but strong and hearty and of robust constitution. Always loving the outdoors, he was in the habit of taking a walk every day and took this accustomed walk the day before his death. At 6:00 a. m. of the 17th he was taken violently ill. At noon he was quieted with a hypodermic and went to sleep, awakening once to tell his daughter that he was quite comfortable, warm and did not want anything. In ten or fifteen minutes he was gone.
Mr. Barnum's home was the Barnum farm at the top of the rise of ground on the road just to the south of the straight road to Morley at the Four Corners. He was a good farmer and took delight in keeping his farm and buildings in good shape. Mr. Barnum was a lover of the woods and spent many happy days in the near Adirondacks. After his daughter, Miss Edith Barnum went to California to teach and married there, Mr. Barnum spent the last years of his life with her in San Francisco although he delighted to return to New York State for occasional visits.
Mr. Barnum had a beautiful bass voice and in his younger days had reputation as a singer throughout this whole section. No glee club or home talent play or choir was quite complete without Mr. Barnum's aid. He was a man of strong friendships and we, personally, always looked forward to a good visit with him on his journeys to Potsdam.
Following his death his body was cremated and the ashes will be sent here and interred beside Mrs. Barnum at Bayside.
