Edgar Bacon
Dec. 13, 1917 - Dec. 30, 1999

JONESVILLE, Va. - Edgar Bacon, 82, died Thursday evening (Dec. 30, 1999) at his home in Jonesville, Va. A Lee County, Va. native, he was born on Dec. 13, 1917 to Drury L. and Patsy Ely Bacon.

One of 10 children, Edgar attended school in Lee County and graduated from Flatwoods High School in 1935. Determined to pursue higher education, Edgar hitch-hiked to Madisonville, Tenn. to attend Hiwassee College.

While working his way through college, he was a member of the Student Council, the debating team and manager of the basketball team.

After graduating with honors from Hiwassee College in 1937, he returned to Lee County and taught school for three years before entering the Army Air Corps in December 1941. A year later, after receiving his commission as a second lieutenant, he married Evelyn Edens on Dec. 28, 1942.

He began pilot training in June 1943 and received his wings in February 1944. In August of that year, he began a tour of duty in the Pacific Islands. On Jan. 17, 1945, his plane was shot down over Russia and he was interned as a prisoner of war for five months before being released in June.

After returning home from his distinguished military career, he entered the University of Tennessee's pre-law curriculum in January 1946. On October of that year, he began his studies at the University of Virginia Law School in Charlottesville, graduating Order of the Coif in October 1948. While in law school, he also participated in Moot Court. Edgar opened his law practice in Jonesville the same month he graduated from law school, retiring in 1996 after 48 years of practice. During his legal career, he served on both the state and district bar councils.

Shortly after beginning his legal career, he began his political career and was elected Commonwealth Attorney of Lee County in 1951 and was appointed to a second term in the mid '50s. In November 1965, he was elected to the first of three terms in the Virginia House of Delegates. He did not seek re-election in 1971. In 1984, he was appointed to the Commonwealth Transportation Board for the first of two four-year terms. Serving the maximum number of terms allowable, his tenure on the board concluded on June 30, 1992.

In addition to serving his country and state, he was a devoted community leader. He played a major role in the growth and development of Lee County's transportation system, educational institutions and industries. He served on the board of directors of the Powell Valley National Bank, on an advisory committee for Clinch Valley College, and taught Sunday school at his church, First United Methodist Church of Jonesville, Va. Always interested in the youth of the community, he coached students in speech contests and directed plays.

A committed family man, Edgar is survived by his wife, Evelyn; three daughters, Diane Bruner, Jonesville, Va., Jan Mosley and husband, Larry, Jonesville, Va., Gwen Pendergraft and husband, Tommy, Corbin, Ky.; five grandchildren, Josh and Jordan Bruner, Aaron and Adam Mosley and Sydney Pendergraft; a brother, Drury Bacon, Duffield, Va.; and a sister, Mary Porter, Radford, Va.
