W. G. Davis.

The death of Hon. W. G. Davis, which occurred at his home at Hogansville, Ga., Monday night, July 11th, came as a shock, which saddened his old home town and community. Relatives and friends knew of his failing health, but hoped for many more years of his useful, public spirited life. Mr. Davis, until 20 years ago, was a resident of LaFayette from early manhood. He was born and reared at Milltown. After coming to LaFayette he was prominently identified with the up-building of the town, serving as councilman and later mayor for many years, during this time he carried for work greatly benefiting the town. He was prominent secret order man and a useful member of the Baptist church. He was married to Miss Susie Driver in January 1884. His wife and three daughters, Mrs. Van Brightman, of Birmingham; Mrs. Herbert Wood and Miss Dorothy Davis, of Hogansville, and two grandchildren, Laura Van Brightman and Miss Frances Wood, survive him, all of whom were at his bedside during his illness, ministering to him with loving care. He was stricken with paralysis July 2nd, and despite faithful nursing and skilled physician's care the sad end came July 11th. Numbers of friends and relatives from Hogansville, Atlanta, Birmingham, Dothan and St. Petersburg, Fla., accompanied the remains to LaFayette. Four cars of honorary pall bearers from LaFayette and throughout the county attended the service. Mayor Sam H. Oliver and councilmen and ladies of the Baptist missionary society of which Mrs. Davis formerly was a member attended officially. Heartfelt sympathy is extended the bereaved family.
