Elma Buchanan died peacefully on April 30th at the age of 95 surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She was born in Eaton, Ohio and came to San Diego in 1935 where she met and married Hugh Buchanan, a resident of San Diego since 1917. Like many homemakers during World War II, she joined the war effort and went to work as a secretary at the Consolidated Vultee aircraft defense plant in San Diego. In 1945 the family moved to a bay front home in Mission Beach where in her later life she was a familiar sight walking her dog, Magee, on the beach. She has lived in La Jolla for the past ten years. Her passion in life was playing bridge which she continued to do into her 90's. An outstanding player, she was a member of the American Contract Bridge League, held the title of Life Master and played numerous bridge tournaments in San Diego and elsewhere in California.

She is survived by a daughter, Darlee Buchanan Crockett, a son Hugh Buchanan, both of La Jolla, four granddaughters, and seven great grand children. She will be greatly missed by all of them.

Services will be private.

Donations may be made to the San Diego Humane Society, 5500 Gaines St., San Diego, CA 92110. Please sign the guest book at obituaries.uniontrib.com
