Amelio Anthony Crespi peacefully passed away on the morning of August 9, 2011.

Amelio was born in Crockett, California on July 2, 1915. At age 13 he traveled to Europe with his parents and remained there for several years before returning to Long Island, New York in 1930.

Amelio comes from a long line of great stone masons who even helped build and repair cathedrals throughout Italy and Switzerland. Mel, as his friends called him, became a very accomplished stone mason, and with his father, continued the family tradition as masonry contractors.

In 1939, Mel went to work for Grumman Aircraft and due to his strong mechanical background he became lead foreman over subassembly manufacturing for Hellcats, Wildcats, and Bearcats fighters as well as TBF torpedo bombers. While working at Grumman, Mel received numerous awards for the designs of new tools and innovated processes which helped Grumman increase their aircraft production as well as aiding the United States in their quest for air supremacy during WWII.

In 1942, Mel met his sweetheart and soul-mate, Florence, and was married on June 21, 1942 for 69 beautiful years. In 1946, Mel moved to San Francisco with his family and parents; buying five acres of land in Mountain View, California.

Mel and his father started up their masonry business at the time California was starting to experience their largest growth period. The masonry skills they brought to the Bay Area were outstanding and much of their work was published in Sunset Magazine. Together they built homes for themselves, as well as his sister and brother-in-law.

Mel prospered well in California and had three children: Anthony, Daniel and Mary. In 1970, Mel retired and moved to Lake Tahoe, California where he built a beautiful home with the help of his wife Florence and started to enjoy his retirement in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Unfortunately his notoriety caught up with him and people who had purchased lake front property on beautiful Lake Tahoe wanted stone fireplaces and their contractors were now knocking on Mel's door. Well, Mel came out of retirement, but only to do select jobs; meeting many famous people who wanted his skills.

Ten years later Mel retired for good and finally he started to enjoy the days with nothing but fishing and the outdoors with Florence. Finally the winters caught up with them and the snow became too deep to plow and shovel, so Mel and Florence moved to Meridian, Idaho to be close to their grandchildren.

Mel is preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Florence, who passed away in January of this year, as well as his son, Daniel Crespi.

He is survived by his children, Anthony (Debbie) Crespi, of Meridian, Idaho, and Mary (Joe) Hendricks, of Livermore, California; grandchildren, Michael Crespi, Eric Crespi, Joseph Crespi, Kristin Crespi Freiha, Michael McCarthy, Michele McCarthy, Mathew McCarthy and Meghan McCarthy; and great-grandchildren, Anthony Crespi, Max Crespi, Camden Crespi, Sophia Crespi, Cole Crespi, Finley Crespi, Asher Crespi, Kiya Crespi, Nathalie Freiha, Emily Freiha and Kaden Freiha.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at the Cremation Society of Idaho. More information about the service, as well as any tributes, condolences, and flower orders can be found at www.cremationsociety-idaho.com.
