"The LaFayette Sun" - October 10, 1900:

Mr. Ab Tatum is a citizen of LaFayette, but that doesn’t signify that he is any less a farmer. He will, this year, on 4 acres of land, after making a heavy crop of rye, pick 5 bales of cotton, averaging 500 lbs. each. And just across the public highway, his brother Mr. Aldridge Tatum, immediately after cutting over 100 bushels of wheat, will make a bale of cotton per acre. He also cut and housed from one acre of land several tons of hay made from pea vines and millet. These gentlemen are two of Chambers County’s most prosperous farmers, and a glimpse into their hog pens and corn cribs is sufficient proof that our most progressive farmers are those who raise their own supplies at home.

Mr. A. S. Tatum Dead Last Sunday Morning.

Mr. A. S. Tatum died at his home in this city last Sunday morning at 5 o'clock, after an illness of about two weeks. He is survived by his wife, one daughter - Miss Sara, one sister - Mrs. M. A. Champion, of Abanda; four brothers - A. A. Tatum, of this city; L. A. Tatum, of Milltown; L. E. and P. B. Tatum, of Abanda, and other relatives and a host of friends who are deeply grieved at his death.
Mr. Tatum was a man of splendid Christian character, devoted to his family and to his church. In his death his family has lost one who loved them with a deep abiding love. LaFayette one of its best citizens and the church one of its faithful members.
Funeral services were held at the LaFayette Baptist Church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock and the auditorium was crowded with relatives and friends who had gathered to pay their last tribute to this good man. The services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. W. Rucker, assisted by Rev. W. B. Hope and Dr. W. C. Bledsoe. Interment was in the city cemetery.

In Memoriam.

Absalom Strayhan Tatum was born January 20, 1855, and died October 16, 1921. On February 19, 1882, he was married to Miss Lizzie Fuller. There was only one child to bless this union. From early childhood he was a faithful and devoted member of the church. He was a kind, loving husband and father. He loved God and his fellowman and lived a simple, devoted Christian life; was always kind and thoughtful for all with whom he came in content; a devoted son and brother to the old father and mother and the sister-in-law who made their home with him, and they can never forget him.
He leaves a wife, a daughter - Miss Sarah - five brothers and a sister to mourn his loss. His brothers are Thomas S. Tatum, L. A. Tatum, P. B. Tatum, A. A. Tatum and L. E. Tatum; a sister, Mrs. Aldora Champion.
He has left us here with sad hearts. We miss him so much; his place among us is vacant - never to be filled. But we know that he is in a better place and that our loss is his gain, and that in God's own time we shall be united again.

- One Who Loved Him.
