George Noah Groves, 90, passed away Saturday, July 23, 2011.

He was born June 10, 1921 in Hammond, Indiana to Noah D. and Helen M. Groves. He married Naomi Jeanette Whistler on April 28, 1946. She preceded him in death in 2008.

He is survived by Michael (Susan) Groves of Fulton, Mo., Phillip (Cathy) Groves of Shady Shores, Texas, Cynthia Groves (Tom) Bookwalter of Perrysville, Indiana and Nancy Groves Brier (husband, Pat, December 2010) of Kaplan, La.

Drafted by the NFL in 1945 while serving in the Philippine Islands and Tokyo, Japan, upon his honorable discharge and return to the USA, he was offered a contract to play professional football for George "Papa Bear" Halas of the Chicago Bears. However, Mr. Halas traded his rights to the rookie coach, Paul Brown and the newly chartered Cleveland Browns Football Club. He also played for the Baltimore Colts and the Buffalo Bills.

He served as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
