Death of Mrs. Susan Downing
Mrs. Susan Downing, mother of Harvey Downing of this place, an aged and respected resident of Princeton, Ill., died at her home Thursday evening, May 23, 1912, following an illness of several months duration. The immediate cause of death was chronic nephritis and a complication of other diseases.
The funeral services were held from the Downing home Sunday afternoon Rev. Harold Parr of the Congregational church officiating. Interment was in Oakland cemetery in that city.
Miss Susan Greenamyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Greenamyer, was born in Milton, Ohio, Feb. 13, 1842. With her father she came to Bureau county in 1856. She was married to E.O. Downing Dec. 23, 1862.
To this union nine children were born, two of whom died in infancy. Five daughters and two sons remain to mourn their loss. The husband, Mr. Downing, died June 19, 1903. The surviving children, all of whom were present at the funeral, are Mrs. Mary Evelhoch of Princeton township; Mrs. Addie Sissler of LaPrairie, Minn.; Mrs. Nora Hartwell of Bonne Terre, Mo.; Harvey of Walnut, Ill.; Mrs. H.G. Carpenter of Princeton and Mabel and Will, who reside at home.
For many years Mrs. Downing resided with the remainder of the family upon a farm about a mile and a half south of Princeton, and she moved to town about a year ago, leaving the farm in charge of Mr. Evelhoch, a son-in-law.
The bereaved children have our sympathy in the loss of their mother.
