My boyfriend, Cliff leaves for a trip, so I call my mom for a bingo night out. We stopped at the local pet shop on the way to the bingo hall. I always have to check out the pet shops for chihuahuas. We are looking at the different dogs, some sleeping, some playing and then we saw her. Alone on a small towel looking like it lost its best friend or family was a very small chihuahua. I inquired about whether it was a male or female and how much it cost. It's a girl and she only cost $850.00 and she is registered. Do you want to hold her? No, I said, but if I won at bingo, I'll call in the morning and buy her.

I didn't win a dime at bingo, but I called the shop first thing in the morning to see if she was still there and yes she was. I'm on my way.

I bought her for Joey as a play mate. Joey is about 2 months older and looks like a doberman in a chihuahua body.

She is beautiful, a soon-to-be long haired blonde chihuahua with beautiful green eyes.

My boyfriend comes home from his trip and sees Joey and looks at a pup on the couch and says, what is that?

We named her Jade, because of her beautiful green eyes that later turned and matched the color of her long hair.

She and Joey never played or bonded together, so we found a family that was selling a white chihuahua. Now we have three, Jade kept to herself and Joey & Jessie had a love-hate relationship. That's another story.

Jades favorite pastime was to be held, be petted, hold her some more, but her all time favorite was sitting in the car or truck. She loved going on rides, but she really loved just being in the car or truck for hours at a time by herself, we called it "going to work".

Everyone that met Jade wanted to hold her, which she loved and wanted to keep her. We had family, friends, the ladies at the vets office and a few strangers tell us if we ever wanted to get rid of her they would be happy to take here, a few offered money.

She was about 5 years old when we were visiting my boyfriends family for a sports event. A nephew brought his new pug over and overwhelmed the chihuahuas with her friskiness, especially Jade. This is the night she had her first seizure.

It was a mild seizure, which lead up to the grand mal seizures, the worst. We had her on phenobarbital for about 4 years. The vet said this would help reduce or control the seizures, but it would also probably shorten her life.

She gave us so many great memories and laughs during her short life. She chewed through the stretcher of our kitchen chair (picture) which we will never get rid of and still use. While fishing she rolled in the skeletal remains of a 6 inch fish which matted in her hair. She is yelping, she is scared of it and it stinks!! She loved chewies and if she couldn't finish it, she would hide them. Being blind in one eye from a seizure, she would hide the chewie in plain sight, not realizing the other could see it. She would spend an hour or so moving the chewie from one spot to the next, so that they wouldn't find it, only to leave it next to the door or blanket. She loves to be petted and held. Going for rides. Going to work. She is beautiful.

The last two days of her life she is in the Intensive Care Unit, also known as the vets home. She worked on Jade for two days, when she would get the last seizure under control and new one would start. She only weighed four pounds and it was to much pain for her to endure. The seizures had taken over. Friday we decided if they continued through the weekend, we would let her go Monday.

Saturday morning I go to work and my boss greets me at the door. I knew this was bad and he tells me I am needed at the vets office, they are bringing Jade in and we have to let go of her now. I leave work and my husband, Cliff leaves home and we are to meet at the vet. I arrive first, then Jade and the vet. Jade is not responding, heavily medicated. I want to wait for Cliff before the vet euthanizes Jade. She is sleeping in my arms in the vets office, waiting for Cliff, he is ten minutes away. I am talking to her, petting her, loving her and she wakes up and looks at me and starts yipping. It was as if she was saying good-bye. We were both at peace.

The vet walked in to see if everything was alright and I said a tearful yes. Then she experienced her last seizure, so the vet gave her one last shot and we waited for Cliff.

She died in our arms, but lives on in our hearts.

Jessie missed her, she would walk around the house looking for her for the next month. Going to all the favorite spots, but no Jade. It took Joey three weeks to figure out Jade was never coming back. It's hard for me to understand the lose, but how do you explain it to Jessie.

She is gone, but never forgotten.
