Velda L. Schlater, 91, of Sullivan and formerly of Cahokia, IL passed away Saturday, July 30, 2011 at the Sullivan County Community Hospital. She was born October 17, 1919 at Silva, MO and was the youngest daughter of the late James Pinkney Wakefield and Nancy Minerva Jane Allen Wakefield. On July 20, 1935 she was united in marriage to Paul Hixson Schlater of Patterson, MO who passed away on April 28, 1969 in Cahokia. To this union one daughter was born, Linda Sue Schlater Gilliam. She was also preceded in death three brothers, seven sisters and one granddaughter.

Survivors include one daughter Linda and her husband Rev. Gary A Gillian, one granddaughter Susan Gilliam Stricklin and her husband Rev. James A Stricklin, Jr of Dayton, OH, one grandson John P Gilliam and his wife Kendra Williams Gilliam of Sullivan, five great grandsons, six great granddaughters, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and a very special friend Jim Benefiel of Sullivan.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Holmes Memorial Chapel with Rev. Gary A Gilliam officiating. Visitation is 9:00 a.m. until time of services. Graveside services and interment will be at 3:00 p.m. CST Tuesday at the Val Halla Cemetery, Belleville, IL Donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
