John McMurray came to work for Mary's father in 1820, and, in Aug 1821, Mary and John were married. John was not Quaker, and, when they married outside the church, Mary was cast out the Quaker church. In Mar 1844, John and Mary became members in the Mormon church. Their family traveled by wagon train with the Warren Snow company, reaching Salt Lake in early October 1852. They had 10 children and are considered to be early pioneers in the Mormon church.
