Olen Carlos "Olie" Farris, age 88, of Mattoon, Illinois, passed away at 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, December 31, 2002, at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon, Ill.
Mr. Farris was born on July 7, 1914, in Coles County, Illinois. The son of John Wesler Farris and Lula Almeda (Fears) Farris, he married Suzanna Ellen Edwards on February 6, 1937.
Mr. Farris retired from the Mattoon Police Department after serving as an officer for over 22 years. Olen was a member of the Broadway Christian Church in Mattoon. He was a member of the Eagles Club, a former member of the Elks and Moose Lodge, a member of the Illinois Police Association, and a member of the Police Benevolent and Protective Association. He loved children and served the community through his participation in various youth organizations.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and two sisters.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Susie (Edwards) Farris; two daughters, Virginia Ellen (Farris) Brown and husband, Rex, of Mattoon, Ill.; Kathy Ann Deckard and husband, Gary, of Mt. Zion, Ill.; one son, Olen Edward "Ed" Farris and wife Sharon of rural Mattoon, Ill.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothea Pennington of Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Funeral services celebrating his life will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 3, 2002, at the Schilling Funeral Home in Mattoon, Ill., with pastor Marvin Flowers and pastor Lloyd Johnson officiating. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, this evening, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Dodge Grove Cemetery in Mattoon, Ill.
