Harlan and Leona Cleese moved to Yuma in November 1932 following Harlan's brother Charlie Cleese and his family. Those were the lean depression years, and the cattle business on the Cleese Family Ranch in Colorado Springs was not doing well. Harlan traded his share of this ranch for the Chevrolet Garage in Yuma.

Harlan grew up and was educated, both high school and Colorado College, out of Colorado Springs. Leona Phillips Cleese grew up in a small town in eastern Kansas, going to a small college in Baldwin, Kansas. Then she taught four yeas in Kansas and finally came to Colorado Springs, when her parents came to Colorado for her father's health. She taught two years in a consolidated school in Peyton and met and married Harlan.

Six years later, they followed brother Charlie to Yuma, bringing two sons, Robert, age 6, and Phillip, age 2. A year later, a daughter Mary May, was born and two years later another daughter, Marjorie Ann.

When World War II struck, the family moved to San Francisco to aid in the war effort, with Harlan and Bob both working in ship yards, building ships. Later, when Bob was old enough, he joined the Army where he served out the remainder of the war. During the time that Harlan was working at Bethlehem Steel Plant he studied and received a Refrigeration Engineer degree and continued his work at Angel Island, a military processing station, for the next two years.

Homesick for Yuma after the war ended, the family returned in 1946 and built and ran the Yuma Food Bank until Harlan retired and sold the plant in 1966. Transcribed by Carol Moore.
