Although this man is listed in the cemetery records as John P. Jeremiah Burns, born in Ireland, he is actually Jeremiah Burns, born
in Alabama. Jeremiah was buried in a plot
with his sister-in-law, Catharine M. T. Burns, four of her children, and two of her grandchildren. Catharine was the wife
of Jeremiah's brother, Charles C. Burns
(1826-1905), who was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Evansville.

Jeremiah and Charles C. Burns were the sons
of Charles C. Burns (1791-1863) and Louisa (Unknown) Burns (1800-1838).

Jeremiah married Nancy McDonald,
daughter of Thomas McDonald and Elizabeth Featherston, on May 23, 1843, in Washington County, Ohio; the marriage ended in the early-to-mid 1860s. The couple had two children, namely:

Matilda Jane (Burns) [Bloomer] Culver
(1844-1928) and
Charles R. Burns (1846- ).

Nancy, who did not remarry, spent her last years with the family of her daughter and
son-in-law, Matilda and Samuel Bloomer.

Jeremiah married Elizabeth ("Eliza") Barker Lackey, daughter of William Lackey and
Harriet Caroline Bell, on September 4, 1866,
in Anderson County, Illinois; they were married until his death. The couple had
four children, namely:

William Edwin Burns (1867-1929),
Helen Eliza (Burns) Burtch (1869-1935),
Emma May (Burns) Smith (1873-1910), and
Harriet Edith (Burns) Newman (1876-1952).
