Mrs Myrtle WHANGER BENNETT, 36, of 607 W Grace St, Richmond VA, -d St Elizabeth's Hosp here today of burns rec'd in the explosion of gasoline at her flat last Thursday.

Using a pan of gasoline to clean some table runners, fluid exploded, covered her with flames.

A native of Greenbrier Co WV, she moved to Richmond several years ago. Her husband, L G BENNETT, is an accountant with the VA State Gov't.

Mrs Myrtle WHANGER BENNETT, 36, of 607 W Grace St, Richmond VA, -d St Elizabeth's Hosp one week after being severely burned... sustained when a pan of gasoline exploded on the back porch of her home, covering her with blazing fuel. She is quoted as saying that while cleaning some table runners, she had started to pour some of the fluid on the runners when the gasoline exploded explainable. A garbage collection employee was standing in the back yard, heard the explosion, ran up to the back porch, carrying her down to the yard, where he rolled her in the dirt until the flames were extinguished.
...Her 06 yr old son Lamar & his nanny were also in the bldg, made their way to safety through dense smoke.
...The Fire Dept quickly controlled the flames, but just as the blaze was almost extinguished, a hose stream upset an electric washing machine which Bebe said contained gasoline, flames leaped up anew... Damage was mostly confined to the living quarters and Bebe's Beauty Shop, which she owned & operated at 607 W Grace St.
...A native of Greenbrier Co WV, the d/o Abraham Grant & Josie Emma LIVESAY WHANGER. She married on 08 Aug 1924 at Ronceverte WV to Lawrence "Guy" BENNETT.
...Bebe taught school several years before going to Richmond, she also taught piano, & conducted a private school early childhood program in Richmond in addition to the shop.
...Survivors include husband L G BENNETT, an accountant in the Dept of Auditor of Public Accounts, State of VA, sons Rudolph, 13(14) & Lamar, 06(7), her mother, Mrs Josie Emma LIVESAY WHANGER of Ronceverte WV, sisters Mrs D E JOHNSON (Nellie Lee) of Ronceverte & Mrs A D LONG (Ethel Josie) of Richmond & bros Jesse Jacob of Cornstock WV, Albert (Elbert Clarence) of Durbin WV, Ernest Grant & Lawrence Abraham of Richmond.
Services at BENNETT Funeral Home w/Rev Richard H FORRESTER, Pastor of Pace Memorial Methodist Church, where Bebe was an active member ... burial in Forest Lawn Cem...
