Eleanor came with her parents and family to Charleston in December, 1821 and then moved on to Wateree in Fairfield District, South Carolina. Eleanor married Henry McDowell, Jr. in 1832 in Chester District, South Carolina and the family moved to Chickasaw County, Mississippi in 1847. They farmed at first and then Henry purchased a hotel in Houston in 1850, which they operated a for number of years. Eleanor continued operating the hotel following Henry's death in 1857.
