~ ~ A Warsaw man was fatally injured early Saturday evening while sitting on his moped at a traffic light.
Warsaw police and emergency personnel were called to Detroit Street (Indiana 15) and Center Street about 5:46 p.m. Saturday about a chain-reaction crash.
EMS workers found James W. "Billy" Beigh, 61, in the roadway with severe head trauma, according to a written statement from the Kosciusko County FACT crash investigation team.
The West Winona Avenue man was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital and then immediately flown to Fort Wayne's Parkview Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Beigh died of his injuries at 9:26 p.m. according to the Allen County Coroner's Office.
FACT team members reported that a vehicle driven by Kerri Ann Cox, 34, had been going west on Center Street just as the traffic light turned green.
Her vehicle struck a car stopped in traffic facing west on Center, directly behind Beigh. The car, driven by Roger E. Middleton, 79, of Warsaw, hit the moped, the FACT team said in a written statement.
Beigh was flung off the moped and hit the front windshield of Middleton's car due to the chain-reaction force, the police statement said.
They also reported that they could find no evidence of braking by the Cox vehicle before it struck the car. Cox was arrested and preliminarily charged with possession of marijuana, the police statement said.
The crash remains under investigation by the FACT team. It said all information related to the crash will be sent to the Kosciusko County Prosecutor's Office for review.
