McAllister began his work life at age 8 in the cotton mills of Pennsylvania, the son of Christopher and Margaret (Morton) McAllister, Irish immigrants. At age 15 he began a five-year carpenter apprenticeship in New York City. His early building work was in theater construction. In 1862 he enlisted in the Army, serving in the Civil War. After that he continued in contracting in Missouri, Kansas, and New York City, finally ending up in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the contractor for almost a dozen of the famous Euclid Avenue Millionaires Row mansions. Alone, and together with the firm McAllister and Dall, he built many more homes, churches, banks, an opera house. However, his best known work in Cleveland is the Soldiers and Sailors Monument on Public Square. He and his wife Emma had three children. His son William Barriss McAllister followed him into the business. After Emma's death, he married Mrs. Kate Fitzhugh Benham in 1896
