She was born Mary Ann Polke in Vincennes, Indiana about 1830; and moved to the Kansas City, MO area with her family in the late 1830's. Mary and Pierre Chouteau were married December 20, 1849. She was related to prominent early pioneers of Kansas City area. Her aunt & uncle were Christiana Polke McCoy and Isacc McCoy. John Calvin McCoy was her first cousin.
