A memorial service for William M. “Bill” Guy, 78, of Haskell will be held July 3, 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Haskell with Rev. John Glover officiating. A private family interment will be held before services at Haskell Memorial Cemetery with the Post #56 American Legion Honor Guard providing a salute. Bill was born January 1, 1930 to V.H. and Minnie Dean (Alder) Guy. He attended school in Eldorado. He passed away Saturday, June 28 at his home in Haskell, surrounded by his family and friends. Growing up in the newspaper business, and working from many small newspapers, including those owned by his father, Bill reached another milestone in his life on January 1, 1949, when he and Purna Reedy of Altus were wed. He then became a roughneck and worked for oil companies across Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and Texas. He later left the oil field and went back to the newspaper, working for the Daily Oklahoman for a time before he and his brother, Virgil, bought the Allen Advocate. The two men also started a new newspaper, the Stonewall Leader. In April 1962, Bill and Purna Guy purchased the Haskell News from R. S. Pennington. Bill was within 10 issues of seeing The Haskell News reach its 100th birthday when he passed away. He was the longest owner/publisher of The News. Upon moving to Haskell, Bill became very involved in the town, attending meetings, joining the Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, the Oklahoma Press Association and Masonic Lodge, and was one of the biggest boosters of small town living and Haskell. He was also the last Justice of the Peace for Haskell, before Oklahoma towns decided to do away with the position. He always encouraged people to vote and show a greater concern for their country, community and fellowman. Bill loved to hunt, fish and spend time outdoors and for a time raised and trained Pointers. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 52 years Purna, in 2001; two sisters, Norma Tawwater and Virginia Kelley; one brother Bob Guy; two infant children and one great grandson. Memorials may be made to the American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Haskell First Baptist Church or Shepherd Care Hospice of Wagoner. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dowdy Funeral Home, Haskell.
